Editing session 5

Last lesson we had completed the order that we are considering have our shot in, however we are unsure whether some are effective enough to fit with our conventions, so we may consider changing some of these. During today's lesson we started to cut our shots down as the raw footage added up to a lot of minutes, so I suggested trimming the shots using the blade on Final Cut Pro X so we could decrease our time and we knew exactly what we had; how long and what clips fitted better.

Here is some footage that I cut down, using the blade of Final Cut Pro X, this is what we are considering including in our montage. However we want fast paced clips in order to make it a montage the fast paced clips with be the realisation to the Todorov's theory.

Editing session 4

Today was the day that we finished ordering the clips, however we are still opening to altering them in case they don't fit further down the line, however at the moment we have put them in the order we think will look good for our psychological horror.

Here is aan image that we cropped, because we filmed it on
my phone the footage was portrait instead of landscape,
we would eventually lead to problems with continuity,
so we decided to see what it would look like cropped and
it didn't distort the footage so we decided to keep it.
This is a before shot of the raw footage before me and my group
cropped it, so we could ensure continuity was continued
throughout our trailer.
During our lesson we also played around with the different
effects that you can apply to the footage. We wanted one of
are shots to look distorted or shaken, and we found an effect
was called distorted. So I applied it to our raw footage
however it didn't look effective enough so we decided
to remove it. However we might consider it for another
shot type, we will decide further upon this when we
start adding effects properly, as this was a suggestion whilst
I thought about it.

Editing session 3

In our third editing session we started to colour match our photos to help continue the continuity for the chronological order aspect of our trailer. The lighting for the two pieces of raw footage that we used were not the same and it disrupted the continuity, so I tried the colour matching on Final Cut Pro X and it worked very well. They looked like they were filmed in the exact same lighting once I had change the colour of the footage.

Here is an image of the timeline for our
trailer, this is showing a part of the our
raw footage that we colour matched.

Here is an image of the two colours that
we colour matched together. The first
image is the correct colour that we
wanted. So I chose the correct image
and colour matched it to the
second image so they were the same.
I did this to keep continuity.

This is the different settings
that you can choose when doing
the colour match. You can alter the
colour, the amount of exposure,
saturation and the fade, as
well as many other things.

Editing session 2

During our editing session today we have continued to order our shots into the places that we believe will be most effective for our psychological horror. The editing process is taking much longer than we imagined because we didn't realise the vast amount of shots that we had done during our filming sessions. So we have continued putting all the shots that were done into an effective order. Then once we have them in order we can decide what does and doesn't fit with the order to our psychological horror trailer.

Here is a chase scene shot, this image I have taken on Final Cut Pro X shows the timeline at the bottom showing were all are raw footage has been put. And then if you look in the top left-hand corner then you can see the vast variety of shots that we can choose from to incorporate into our trailer sequence.

Here again is another view of the timeline and then in the bottom right-hand corner you can see the different transitions that we can us and we played around with these to find an effective look for this scary aspect of the trailer sequence. I went into the transitions and applied them over the raw footage and then me and my group watched them to see if they would be effective enough to work with the conventions of a psychological horror.

So overall we got quite a lot of our sequence put into place, however we are still considering changing some of the places were the raw footage has been positioned. This is because we want our trailer to be scary and still fit with the conventions. I would also like the connotations of props and characters to be clear to the audience as this is a vital part to ensure the audience know they're watching a psychological horror.

Poster research

Here is a powerpoint presentation that I have found whilst researching into different types of posters and how they should be presented towards the audience, in ways that will appeal to them.
Order of information
  1. Image
  2. Title
  3. Directors, Producers and Actors
  4. Quotes, Recommendations and Ratings
  5. Awards
  6. Taglines
  7. Date, Rating and Extra information
  8. Film Theories
From looking through this presentation I know now the different things that i can incorporate on my movie poster, and the different places to position them.

Editing session1

Today I brought in my iPhone and my iPad and cabe in order to upload our raw footage on the iMacs as me and my group had arranged a day with our teacher to book the computers in order for use to upload them. Beforehand we were worried about the quality of the footage because last year we had some difficulty with the quality of the footage we filmed, and in some cases we had to re-film some pieces of the footage. However when we uploaded the footage it was of a very high quality which we were very glad about. It tuck the majority of our lesson to go through and click the filming footage we had done, and then for it to download them onto the computer, this was because there was a lot of footage. Then once the downloading was completed we started to insert our footage into chronological order of how we wanted it to be.

Here is some of the footage that we uploaded onto the
Imacs.
Here is the timeline of raw footage in the order that we think
we are going to have it in.

Our Distributor

After some discussing with my group with my group with have decided to go with Lionsgate entertainment for our distributor for our trailer. Lionsgate is an independent film company and our film is independent so we agreed that it would be the ideal distributor to use for our trailer. We also used it due to its popularity, we believe it would distribute our trailer appropriately. Also the trailer analysis I did of 'You're Next' was distributed by Lionsgate and this will be the film I want to take inspiration from and I will be showing this to my group and seeing if they agree.

Lionsgate are responsible for the distribution of:
  • Saw (franchise)
  • Texas Chainsaw 3D
  • American Psycho
  • The Devil's Rejects
  • Hostel (franchise)
  • You're Next
  • My Bloody Valentine 3D

Our Distributor

For our distributor we are doing Lionsgate as it is an independent company, and our film comes under the category of independent, so we have also decided to go with an independent company.

Popular Lionsgate films

  • Saw
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D
  • American Psycho
  • Hostel
These are all very successful movies that have been created into trilogies as they were so popular. Which shows just how good this company is, because no only did they help make these films popular, they also helped with there being sequels to go with them.

Typography

For our title I would like to use red text to hint at the conventions of a psychological thriller, so it will hint at the idea of blood.

This text looks like it has been scratched using blood, which looks scary is the look that I want to aim for. The connotations of red suggests violence, blood and death and this hints and foreshadows the conventions of a psychological horror. The idea of the text being in red draws your attention to it instantly.

This text looked again like book and its been drawn on but not fully joined up, this would add enigma because who's going to bleed, this makes you want to watch why this has specifically been done. This is deliberately done to create fear and alarm, to make the audience feel frightened.

This image is not as scary as the other because it is in black, but black connotes death and fear and this is the representation that we would like of psychological horror to send across to our audience.

These are just a few ideas of text that I am thinking about considering, however I am going do further research into typography as I think the is very scary. However I think the text in very important in grabbing the audiences attention, so the typography is something that I need to consider will a great deal of care, before I pick one. Red is a colour that I definitely want to consider because I think the connotations of red; gore, violence and blood fit incredible well with the conventions of a psychological horror.

Filming - Day 4

Today after school I assembled our actors and actresses for our cult, and we all walked to my house to start filming our remaining shots. With these shots being filmed in the light, I have suggested that we when we come to edit the footage on Final Cut Pro X we colour match these shots with the ones we did on Thursday 29th October, so we have continuity and also so it looks more sinister. As one of the conventions of a psychological horror are shadows and darkness, and this is a convention I want to conform to.

Here is a long shot that I did of the cult members walking up the path way towards my house. I think that this shot would be a bit boring if we were to leave is at its original speed, so I have suggested that we use jump cuts here to speed the process up, and add a sinister turn to it because the audience won't be expecting it. Or we could increase the speed on the Macs when we come to edit it on Final Cut Pro X.

Here is the raw footage of another long shot that I did, again I want to colour match this footage to footage that is much darker to add a sinister sense to it. With this footage I want to cut it up and use it in a montage of fast paced images within the trailer, due to the shaky movement towards the end of the footage, which was due to having the incorrect tri-pod, as my phone was too small or it so I had to hold it to keep it more secure.

Filming schedule

During today's lesson we have decided that we are going to record any remaining shots on Wednesday 4th November. This is where we will film our shots remaining shots to do with our cult. So we have arranged a group of individuals from our school to help us out.
