Analysis group reflection

In our lesson today we decided to to analyse the research that each of our group completed on the different sub-genres within horror. I looked at slasher, Amber looked at psychological and Jamie looked at paranormal, so we spent our lesson each analysing the research that we had all completed, so we cold decided whether we wanted to do horror or do horror as a sub-genre.

Ambers work- Psychological- 'The Strangers'

Overview
For Ambers research she looked into 'The Strangers' which is a psychological horror, about a couple that tare going away for a relaxing weekend, it turns into anything but, as three masked individuals
show up. They are not nice individuals either, they're out for blood. So the couples romantic weekend, turns into them struggling for survival.
Typical conventions
  • low key lighting
  • shadowing
  • Diegetic sound
  • Artificial lighting
  • Antagonist
  • Protagonist
  • Sex appeal
  • Establishing shot of the location
  • Isolation
  • Shadows
  • Masks

Jamie's work - Paranormal- 'Annabelle'

Overview
For Jamie's research he looked at the film 'Annabelle' which is a paranormal horror, and a couple who purchase a doll, that wants the soul of their baby. The spirit will not leave them alone, no matter how many time they throw or attempt to destroy the doll. Its out for a soul and its not leaving until it gets one.
Typical conventions
  • Props-dolls
  • violent attacks
  • Low key lighting
  • Antagonist
  • Protagonist
  • Phallic symbols-Knife
  • Low angle shots
  • High angle shots
  • Narrative has something to do with cults
  • Blood

Currently my favourite sub-genre from the three we researched is Psychological horror, I also think this would be much easier to make look realistic. For example paranormal their is a fine line between looking scary and ghostly and then looking silly. I don't think we have the right equipment or special effects to make it look realistic. Slasher uses a lot of weapons throughout, and we don't have access to things props and this could be dangerous to us, so I don't think we would be able to make a slasher. However I think with the correct narrative we could create a professional looking psychological thriller.
