The protagonist is usually predominately male however because my group are looking at challenging stereotypes I have looked mainly at female protagonists, but we are having our focus group later on in the week. So the input from the individuals my make us go with a male protagonist, so I have research both. The majority of protagonists have a motivation behind helping save people; for family, friends, or because there curious.
Dr. Samuel Loomis “Halloween”
This particular character has dealt with Michael Myers and knows what motivates his, so this makes him a threat to Mike Myers within the franchise of films. His motivation to save people is to find out what motivated a 15 year old boy to snap and kill his sister on Halloween. This makes him come to the conclusion that Mike Myers is not insane but in fact evil. When Myers in sent to a mental asylum, and the doctor is given an ultimatum to keep Myers as his patient. And he believes he is the only one Myers trusts. So he agrees to protect others. His motivation is to ensure that no-one else gets hurt and because he wants to get to the bottom of Michael Myers motivations.
Clarice Starling “The Silence of the Lambs”
She is a new police officer who goes to a mental asylum to interview Hannibal Lecter, she goes here to receive information about a currently active serial killer called Buffalo Bill, who the FBI are looking for. Her motivations are to get information about an active serial killer to stop others from dying, but the only way she can do this is by giving another serial killer personal information. The audience decode that she may be petite but mentally she is strong willed and won't give up until; she has got her man back in prison.
Sidney Prescott from "Scream"
Sidney is an example of final girl theory because she is the last survivor with in the Scream franchise. The series of films starts off with Sidney as normal teenage girl, attending school. And it follows her into her older years. Her motivations to be the protagonist are because the murders occur on the night of her parents deaths and she is attacked herself and manages to survive. Then the killer starts taunting her with phone calls. Her role was originally the victim but she has stared in of the Scream films, so she has grown into the heroine. This is because she confronts the killer and defeats them. So we need to consider whether our protagonist character is growing to represent being strong, or whether we are going to make them look vulnerable like Sidney was at first. The audience decode Sidney to be vulnerable, however when she needs to she has the fighting spirit to attempt to stop the antagonist.
Rose Da Silva from "Silent Hill"
Rose Da Silva is a mother who is determined to find a cure for her daughters nightmares by taking her to a town called silent hill. But this isn't just any town its a town where the death live, no living person is allowed to go there. She is the protagonist because she is motivated by her love for her daughter, she wants to protect her daughter from this horrible nightmares. So when considering our protagonist for our film trailer, we need to think about whether they have a motivation for what they are doing, and whether this will be clear to the audience.
