Psychological Horror Movie Posters

Within the poster there is minimum us of colour, there is only white, black, blue and a pale orange colour to represent flesh of the individuals hand. The use of colours is very limited on this film poster, but they do infer quite a lot when you look at them. For example the colour blue symbolises loyalty and trust, however this is being washed out by the more dominate colour black. This suggest that loyalty and trust is slipping away. The use on the hand grabbing onto the bath suggest that they are grasping hold of the loyalty and trust but they can't quite keep it because the black is rising and possible corrupting their hand. The colour white is also used within the poster, white is associated with purity and goodness, but this colour is again being washed out by the colour black. The white looks like a light shining down, this could be referring to heavenly things, but the use of black represents the purity being swallowed up suggesting someone or something is taking the goodness and purity away. The text is also in black, which connotes death and fear, and this could be foreshadowing death.
The dominate image suggests that someone is grasping hold of something, but they are losing because they only have one hand on and there fingers look like they are slowly slipping away also. The close up of the hand shows us that the person is wearing a wedding band, so this tells us that the person is married, so this hints that the film could possible be about a married couple. The fact the hand is positioned upright suggests the individual is below, and this links to the title choice 'What lies beneath', the person grasping on could be the person the title is talking about.
The poster also contains a movie quote 'A first class thriller' suggesting that it is very good, however although it say this it is under the category of psychological thriller as you can see from the image at the very top. There are also quotes that link the poster to the trailer 'He was the perfect husband until his one mistake followed them home', this links the poster to the film trailer and the audience will associate them both together. We are also given the characters name is bold text at the very top of the poster suggesting there importance.
But the title name is more dominating as it is right in the very centre of the poster for all to see, and the text is a lot more bolder than any other text of the poster, which makes is stand out more and catch the eye.
When I come to do my movie poster I need to consider my us of colour and ensure that it fits with the theme of the movie we go for. I need to think of different ideas for what each colour might connote to myself and the audience. I also think to think carefully about the text I use and the colour to ensure that it meets a professional standard and stands out to my audience. This poster also includes an institution, so I need to consider an institution and one that makes horror movies or I need to create my own institution and create a background for it.
